Mandatory training for strata committee members

The final stage of the reforms recommended by the 2021 Statutory Review of Strata Laws have now commenced. 

• From 1 October 2026 all new or re-elected strata committee members appointed on or after 1 October 2026 must complete the free, online training provided by NSW Fair Trading via the Strata Hub.

• The training takes approx. 1 hour and must be completed within 3 months of appointment or re-election.

• Failure to complete the training within the 3-month window results in automatic removal from the committee.

• Two-lot strata schemes OR committee members filling a casual vacancy for less than 3 months are exempt from this mandatory training requirement.
• Existing committee members are not obliged but are encouraged to undertake the free training.

Practice Tip: In due course practitioners acting for prospective purchasers may wish to include compliance with this training requirement as part of their pre-exchange enquiries to evaluate committee compliance and overall scheme management.
